Emily Harris joined City of Newport Orchestra as the soloist, to play the Gliere Harp Concerto, on 20th October 2019.
Emily Harris is completing her Master’s Degree at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, under the tuition of Caryl Thomas. She is generously supported by an annual scholarship from the college, the Welsh Government Post Graduate Interim Support, and the Worshipful Livery Company of Wales. As part of her studies, Emily has spent time on the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Welsh National Opera Orchestral Scheme where she has gained experience beside principal harpists Valerie Aldrich-Smith and Katherine Thomas. She has also played with both orchestras professionally under the batons of James Southall and Mark Wigglesworth. Emily also enjoys playing in the Piolo Trio, which comprises three talented young musicians of diverse backgrounds; Georgina Arnold Viola, Poppy Wheeler Flute and Emily. As a trio they have received instruction from highly acclaimed performers including Nancy Johnson, Caryl Thomas and Isabelle Perrin. As well as performing Emily teaches harp, piano and music theory privately and works for Gwent Music Support Services as a peripatetic harp teacher. She gives sectional classes to the Gwent Youth Orchestra and String Orchestra. Emily takes great pleasure in her students’ progress and encourages people to learn the harp. She gives harp workshops for various organisations including the Lady Llanover Society and the West of England Clarsach Society. Emily and a committee organise an annual Hands on Harp Day in Llanfoist, Abergavenny which involves classes throughout the day led by professional harpist for all standards. The next Harp Day will be held on 11th July 2020 if anyone would like to come and try out the harp! Her love of music has provided Emily the opportunity to travel widely, including performing in Carnegie Hall, New York under the baton of Sean O’Neill as part of a Gala Concert in 2017. She has also performed for British Royalty including HRH the Prince of Wales. Emily would like to thank Mr Sean O’Neill and the City of Newport Symphony Orchestra for giving her this opportunity. |
