The City of Newport Symphony Orchestra welcomed finalists and audience to St John the Baptist Church in Wales, Newport, for the Finals of the second Gwent Young Musician and Gwent Concerto Soloist Competitions, held on 13th May 2023.
The Orchestra are extremely proud to host these two competitions for young musicians, from, living or studying in Gwent to develop their talents and musical skills and give them the opportunity to put these to the test to an esteemed panel of judges in a public performance.
The Finals were in two sections, with The Gwent Young Musician 2023 for 15 years of age and under in the morning session, and the afternoon session featured the Gwent Concerto Soloist 2023 Final for musicians 21 years and under. The standard of playing was impressive in both final rounds and featured students of violin, viola, bassoon, trumpet, tuba, piano and harp.
Adjudicators Eugene Monteith and Dr. Bruce Perkins awarded runner-up and winner prizes. Daniel Keevil, who played the piano, won first prize in the Gwent Young Musician Competition 2023 and he will be invited to play the piano as part of one of the orchestra’s concerts. The winner of the Gwent Concerto Competition 2023 was Patrick Miller, who will be invited to perform Vaughan Williams’ Tuba Concerto with the orchestra. The runners-up for the competitions were Chloe Liew on the violin and Heidi Walliman for her bassoon concerto.
Prizes were also awarded by the Hywel Davies Trust to help promising young musicians with their musical development and support them financially.
We are extremely grateful for the help and support of the following partners and sponsors:
Hywel Davies Musical Charity for Young Musicians, Gwent Music & Friends of Gwent Music, Ev-entz Musical Instruments and Stage Management, Cardiff Violins, Rotary Club of Newport, Canon Colin Westbrook. Thank you also to our generous volunteers whose support makes this showcase of Gwent’s fine young musicians possible: Gisele Bonadeo-Boll, CNSO Committee members, and many helpers on the competition finals day.
Huge congratulations to all the finalists and thanks to their accompanists, teachers and supportive family and friends. We look forward to 2025 for the next competition!
