The third Gwent Young Musician and Concerto Competitions are complete! We hosted a day of performances of Saturday 11th May 2024 at St John Baptist Church and the standard of performances was incredibly high. At the City of Newport Symphony Orchestra, we are committed to supporting young musicians in the area and providing performance opportunities such as the competitions is important to our mission. The adjudicators this year were Dr. Bruce Perkins and Roussanka Karatchivieva.
In the morning, Musical Director, Anna Beresford, welcomed audience members and finalists, introducing seven young musicians performing short programmes, playing cello, harp, piano, tuba and violin. Our adjudicators who were impressed by the confidence, maturity and musicality of all of the performances. All finalists received certificates and feedback sheets, and the runner-up prize was awarded to harpist, Gwenan Dickenson. The winner of the Gwent Young Musician Competition 2024 was awarded to Erin Morgan for her performance on the violin. Erin will be invited to play with piano accompaniment at a future CNSO concert.
In the afternoon, the audience was ready for the concerto finalists. Four soloists performed excellent concerti, ranging in styles and individuality. It was great to witness the culmination of dedication and practice from the finalists, all of whom performed very well. The performers ranged across string and woodwind instruments, with cello, flute, oboe and violin on show. The runner-up prize was awarded to Bethan Cole who played the flute. The winner of the Gwent Concerto Competition 2024 was announced as Jake Lewis for his cello performance. Jake will be invited to perform a concerto with the CNSO in the next season.

A huge congratulations to all of our performers for such a wonderful day. Thanks to friends, family, teachers and audience members who supported the finalists along throughout the day. Thanks also to the accompanists, who were excellent and supportive musicians to all the young finalists.
The competitions are completely run on a volunteer basis by orchestra committee members and led by previous orchestra leader Gisele Bonadeo-Boll. We are extremely grateful for support from Canon Colin Westbrook, the Blakemore Foundation and Gwent Music.
