CNSO are hosting two competitions to showcase young talent in South Wales. Entries are open for both, see below for more information:

Concerto Competition 2026
This competition is open to all classical instrumental students of string, wind, brass, piano and percussion instruments from, resident or studying in South Wales and is a golden opportunity for talented and aspiring young musicians to become CNSO Concerto Soloist 2026. Entrants should be 21 years of age or under on August 31st, 2026.
The Competition for each category is based on a Qualifying Round in which we will hear one movement of the concerto (up to 20 minutes) on Saturday 17 January 2026 and then a Final which will follow on 14 March 2026 in which the whole concerto will be presented. Both Qualifying Round and Finals should be with piano accompaniment.

There is a non-refundable entry fee of £20 per entry for the CNSO Concerto Soloist 2026.

Young Musician Competition 2026
Entrants for the CNSO Young Musician Competition should be 15 years of age or under by August 31st, 2026. Be from, resident or studying in South Wales and have already passed Grade 6 ABRSM or be of an equivalent standard. They will be required to play an own choice 5-minute programme of music in the Qualifying round (17 January 2026) and the final round (14 March 2026) will consist of a programme of 7-10 minutes again own choice and all with piano accompaniment.

There is a non-refundable entry fee of £10 per entry for the CNSO Young Musician 2026 Competition.

Entries must be received by November 30th, 2025. All Qualifying Rounds and Finals in both competitions should be accompanied by piano accompaniment. Where an entrant requires a piano accompaniment, they should arrange their own accompanist. A list of accompanists will be provided: it is up to entrants to contact an accompanist, arrange rehearsals and remuneration.

The Qualifying Rounds will be adjudicated by the Musical Director, Leader, and Chairman of the City of Newport Symphony Orchestra. The Finals of each Competition will be judged by Independent Adjudicators.

All communications will be online by email as this is a paperless organisation.
